red

The color red has symbolized passion, desire, and love for centuries. Since its origin, red dye was very difficult and expensive to get, so it became a favorite color for the rich. In France, it became a favorite color for the aristocracy and in Japan and Italy it was associated with luxury and royalty. Greek mythology states the red rose was dedicated to Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love. Aphrodite was running towards her lover, Adonis and pricked her foot on a white rose and stained the flower with her blood. This was said to be the first red rose ever to appear on Earth All of these fascinating examples highlight why red has become the iconic and symbolic color associated with love and passion.

pink

Pink is a combination of red and white. White represents purity and when mixed with the hot passion of red, it reveals a gentler kind of love in the color pink. This softer shade has been used as a symbol of romantic love for many years. In fact, during the Victorian era, only young ladies who were considered pure could wear pink!

There are many famous examples of pink and red being used as Valentine’s Day colors. One of the most iconic is the Hallmark card company. For decades, they have released special collections of Valentine’s Day cards in these colors. And, in fact, their first Valentines ever were pink and red! These greeting cards were printed text and line images made from steel die engravings. The hand-fed press would produce 700 Valentine’s Day cards per hour and then they were hand painted!

What do you think about when you see the colors pink and red? For many people, they represent love and all that comes with it! Whether you are celebrating Valentine’s Day or not, these colors always remind us of the importance of love in our lives.
